Sound Policy

Otherworld 2017

Tabula Rasa

  1. The placement team will designate three types of sound zones for the Otherworld event.
    • Sound Camp Zone: Will accommodate DJ’s, dance music, bar camps, and other events associated with big sound amplification.
Active sound production at all hours of the day and night at up to 95 decibels volume is permitted and measured at the designated camp perimeter.
Example: Food processor, circular saw at 1 meter, power lawn mower at 3 meters, jack hammer at 15 meters.
    • Theme Camp Zone: Permitted to use amplified sound in or close to residential camping.
Active sound production from 10am until 2am at up to 80 decibels at camp perimeter is permitted.
Example: Vacuum cleaner, diesel truck, alarm clock, telephone dial tone.
    • Quiet Camp Zone: Acoustic sound and low amplification.
Active sound between 10am until 8pm at up to 65 decibels at camp perimeter is permitted. Generally not amplified sound (small ghetto blaster okay) and acoustic instruments (not drums).
Example: Dishwasher, air conditioner, conversational speech.
Essential generators such as First Aid, Rangers, and Center Camp are exempt from time limits.
  2. Sound Marshal and Event Producer will have a decibel meter and measure maximum levels at designated camp perimeters. Mobile units are measured at 10 meters. Two warnings will be issued for excessive sound levels and the third offence will result in sound production equipment being confiscated and returned at the close of the event.

Note:
All dB levels refer to maximum potential DBA.

The important thing here is the impact of the sound itself. The numbers (dB) are guidelines and the important thing is the impact your sound is having.

Neighbours should talk to one another when sound becomes problem and try to resolve the issue through direct communication.
